Who holds the deposit paid for a private rental, and who do you contact if the ex-landlord/letting agent refuses to return it?

Either the landlord/letting agent (under the insured scheme) or a deposit protection scheme (under the custodial scheme).
If the landlord/letting agent refuses to return it then lodge a dispute for it's return in full with whoever it's protected with.:footie:Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

How would you find out who has it?0

You should have been given the Prescribed Information (a sort of certificate) when your deposit was protected. If you haven't received one then the deposit schemes used in England and Wales are:
- My Deposits
- The Deposit Protection Service (DPS)
- The Dispute Service (TDS)
You can check with the schemes to see if anything has been registered for you.
In Scotland it would be:- My Deposits Scotland
- Safe Deposits Scotland
- Letting Protection Service Scotland
