New Credit Card Enquiry

in Credit cards
Due to a recent bereavement and having to use any savings to get back on an even keel I now find I have nothing to fall back on if something goes wrong (car, home, etc.). Enquired about a credit card with Santander - they started to ask the usual questions including have you any CCJ's or bankruptcy in the past 6 years. I hesitated and said I had a CCJ 15 years ago. The guy went away to check and told me that Santander have a policy of not offering a card to anyone with a CCJ in their credit history however long ago, so why the 6 years question? As I still need to locate a credit card I'm worried now that my credit score will be affected due to this enquiry. Any advice? Thanks.

Hi soulboy, sorry about your recent loss. Have you ever had a ccj in the past 6 years? Your answer should of been no. No idea why they did refuse you, maybe it was yourself that gave them the reason. Have you tried the credit card checker on here, mse? Or from your own bank? That would be my first port of call. You have no score that matters to anybody but yourself. Good luck 0

Make an online application to Santander or apply eleswhere for a credit card.
I'd guess Santander didn't do a credit search on you.0 -
This would appear to be a problem of your own making. You were asked if you had had a ccj or bankruptcy in the past 6 years.
From what you say above it does not appear that any actual application was made so there is unlikely to be an effect on your credit file.
Use the eligibility checker to find out what cards you are likely to be approved for.0 -
Thanks guys - you have put my mind at rest. I didn't think it would count as an application to be honest. It was a poor telephone line and the gentleman had a very strong Scottish accent, so I misheard him when he asked if I had any CCJ's or bankruptcy issues, hence the reason I mentioned it. It was only afterwards I realised what he had said about the past six years. My concern is that had I said "no", the application would have gone through and I would still have been declined due to their "policy". I thought CCJ's were clear by law after six years anyway so don't understand how they can action their policy like this.0
