Being Unemployed

How do you guys fill your day?

How do you fill your week?

As you are unemployed, is your mindset to not go out at all whatsoever? are you a recluse?

Do you look for jobs mon-fri then fri evening or saturday you go out to let off steam?

How is it structured for you guys?

Its not longer going door to door asking for jobs, its all online now...

When I was unemployed (for six months) back in 2013/4, there was no way I could afford to go out on a Friday or Saturday night (and I was lodging with my parents!)

Don't knock going door-to-door, people still do find jobs that way with smaller businesses. Don't rely on search engines either, look on the websites of companies you would like to work for. That's how I finally found work with a museum that only said they where recruiting via their website and a single post on Facebook. Same happened with my sister at a well-known Cathedral, who she worked for at weekends while at university, and was then offered a Graduate position in their new exhibition.

Having been unemployed for a few years in the 80's I can tell you that after a while life simply slows down. Its no good getting up in the morning and doing everything you have to do in a couple of hours. You simply must take all day over the most mundane of tasks, or you go mad. That's why you often hear the long term unemployed say they didn't have time for something. They are right, once you live at that sort of pace and with that mindset it can take days to sort out anything a bit more complicated than normal.
    Your life just drains away.

I wasn't unemployed but I was on 6 hours a week at work.

On the days I wasn't at work I went to library and look for jobs and did it sistimatically for me and then I did some course work for a free online course I was doing.

I also started looking for freebies and discount coupons that takes up time.

After my 2 hours were up I'd go to another library in another city I'm with and look for stuff online there.

As I have disabled Bus pass I travelled to places I wouldn't have before. My photography hobby heightened so spent time doing that.

Of course I had days at home and when there's no one at home its a lot easier to catch up on tasks I needed to do

    ^^^ That

Won't work with a large company, but there's nothing to be lost by going door to door on the smaller firms. It'll be tough, because you will get rejections, but you never know your luck.

Look smart - depending on what you are looking for, smart casual is usually fine - smile, be polite, carry copies of your CV and know if you can start tomorrow/that afternoon/next Monday.

Being unemployed can be unhelpful-habit forming, so if you can devote a day to door-to-door, it'll help get you back into work faster than slogging over a computer.

I've been unemployed for a couple of months and its been great, haven't had any time off since early 2014. Last couple of weeks though I've turned it into a job in itself - applying for job after job, tailoring my CV for some jobs, researching companies, there is no limit to what you can learn. Interviews take a lot of prep too.

The only job you will get knocking on doors is a job washing plates or staking shelves. At the same time you should find yourself outside the house at least sometimes for interviews with employers or at least agencies. I tend to be very intensive with job searching and keep an eye on totaljobs and indeed morning, day and night for jobs. I was up filling in an online registration form at 2am last night!!

    Staking shelves?

At least those working washing dishes and stacking shelves are earning money and paying taxes while they find a better job. An employer is going to prefer the candidate working in the local caf! for NMW, than the person who has been on JSA for months.

No idea what the OP is looking for - might be stacking shelves, might be IT, but they don't say. And there's nothing wrong with plate washing or shelf stacking either.

Standard advice for a truck driver is to do some door knocking, should get a 25-30k job that way. It does happen - why on earth do I want to go through the palaver of advertising when someone reasonable turns up on my door.

    What do I do...

Sleep in at least until 8am get the laptop computer out check the emails, check MSE, actually get out of bed and get a cup of tea and some toast, move to the living room, check the news, do my daily clicks (earns a few quid), play free bingo, look at the early prices on the horses and place any arbs for a few more pounds, check banking and transfer money as required, check mse again, check facebook, check hotukdeals, look at the mystery shopping sites for anything close by which earns a few more pounds, on a monday I'll go out and get a couple of O2 Meal Deal's, another day I'll make some lunch at home, I might go out for the day, I might go to the local pub for a drink or two....it depends. My mornings are scheduled but by the time it get's to about midday the rest of the day could be anything. I try and get out 3 times per week. Hopefully somewhere that I can mystery shop, or somewhere that has free entry.
