Thank you all for your suggestions. Butterflymum, there were some good methods on the site you suggested. The copper tape doesn't work. Chickens and hedgehogs I would love, can't have chickens as OH is allergic, hedgehogs and frogs deserted when houses were built on the previously wild ground behind us. Scissors after dark and a slug trap seem to have reduced the numbers, however, the slugs will win in the end!0

Considered nematodes but didn't go for them, quite expensive, have to be renewed every 6 weeks, and it seemed a bit like maximatosis, i.e., introduced by man with horrible consequences. Thanks anyway, Mojisola!0

Don't know how big your garden is, but you can encourage frogs back by digging a shallow widelife pond. You can plant it up beautifully and make a feature of it
One of the best things I found to protect plant is shells. Years ago I bought some decorative crushed sea shell to put in vases, then I had the idea of putting them around my hostas and voila - slug free
I was thinking oyster shell would be hard and sharp enough. You can buy it in an animal feed store for like a £1 a kilo0 -
Suki1964, garden not big and it slopes so no pond. Small grandchildren, they would be in it as well! Crushed shells I'll try, also some sharp sand. It's all good fun!0

Nematodes are the way to go. They aren't that expensive (unless the garden is massive) and really do the job. £20 every 6 weeks is worth it for me.0

Had enough of the nightly slug fest as they chomped their way through my newly laid plants. Visit to B&M yesterday, tub blue pellets @ £2.95,
