    No wonder we all get confused. I would call somewhere with population of 17,000 a town personally.

    Indeed. It's about a dozen times the population of my nearest town, and five times the population of the next nearest.
    But then I can think of a village that calls itself a city because its got a cathedral.

    Which always used to be the official definition.

    Anyway, back to the question. For many people, it will be a plus-point to have a supermarket so close. For others, it will be a negative. But I suspect that the question wasn't so much about a supermarket as about the individual chain...
  • True - make that a Waitrose nearby, but not placed so as to have entrances or back of it (ie with all the "gubbins" there) nearby and we would be talking a rather different story.
