First time buyer query

I've searched high and low online for an answer to this so I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me!

My partner and I are buying our first property together which is an apartment. We received our contract and paperwork through today to read and sign but there's something very troubling and confusing!

The seller wants to have access to the property for one year after the sale and we also have to ask their permission if we wish to sell again within four months. I'm not bothered about the selling part as we wish to live here for a long time, but with them wanting to have access to the property I'm not okay with this - this also incurs us additional costs regarding the land registry!! Is this normal? We are not happy about this at all, but are now very worried that if we challenge it we could lose out on the property.

Has any one else been in this situation or does any one have any advice? Many thanks!

    I agree. I'd rather miss out on a property than have the previous owner be able to have access to MY home for a year and be able to dictate when I'm able to sell it! Surely your solicitor doesn't advise you to agree to it?!
  • Thank you both for the replies! I'm awaiting a response from my solicitor about this, as I've said to him it's absolutely ridiculous! You don't buy a property to then have to answer to the previous owner for a year. I was just wondering if this was something other people had dealt with :( feel so upset this is happening as our experience so far has been awful with the purchase, think it's been doomed from the start now :(

    No they can't have access to a property owned by someone else. If they want access then they shouldn't sell it. Do not sign anything that gives them access.

    The OP doesn't say that their solicitor hasn't given them similar advice to us! Though if not, I'm wondering if the OP has possibly misunderstood something, given how bizarre both conditions sound.
  • Sadly it is as bizarre as it sounds! I'm speaking to my solicitor today and am going to be asking why we were not informed about this all earlier and why they have not raised any issues regarding it.

    Any clues as to what sort of "access" they're expecting? Are they leaving stuff behind in the flat? Wanting to kip on your sofa?
