    During my current purchase, I've been in contact with the vendor's neighbours and they've been really helpful. Could you go and meet the neighbour who might be friendly (or neighbourly) with the vendor and see if they know about this holding up the sale of their home?

    Thanks for all of the advice everyone. Fortunately following discussions between the EA's MD and surveying firm concerned there has been a change of stance and my chosen surveyor will be allowed to complete the work after all.
  • The estate agent might as well have called you and said "You know that house you are buying? You're paying way too much.."

    Cancel the surveyor and buy something else.
