Date on driving licence query

After a 45 minute phone call arguing with my insurance company it transpires that the date on my licence " issued by dvla 14.10.1998 " and the date in my on line web portal " licence valid from 14.10.1998 " are incorrect. I actually passed my driving test on 12.07.1993. Now I think the 98 date is when I last sent my licence to Swansea for change of address but insurance company are adamant they can only use the 98 date. Is this normal ? If so, what would happen if you moved house yesterday? I've been insuring cars for 22 years and this has never come up before. Shall ring them tomorrow when they are open , just wondering if its me or common problem.

The date you qualified could be shown on the back, Column 16. Mine shows a date in 1976 in spite of qualifying in 1963 thoughI am not a cat (But my friend is)0

The DVLA only started issuing Driving Licences in 1973 so I doubt if anyone would have a date in the 'valid from' column before then.
Licences previously were issued by your local authority and were valid for 3 years.
Mine in Column 10 of my 2014 style of licence says valid from Jan 1975, but I passed the test exactly 3 years to the day before that.
My Provisional Licence and my 1st Full Licence were issued by my local county council in Scotland.
But the OP should have the 1993 earlier date on his if that is when he passed the test. He should get that fixed asap.
Apart from the length of experience the difference between a 1993 licence and a 1998 one could create a problem regards towing trailers as the rules changed significantly on 1st January 1997.0 -
Iceweasel you're a genius.
Withstanding the 98 date for issued . I'm licenced to tow a trailer dated 93. Oh ive got no dates on the back of my licence at all.0 -

I haven't got one of these new fangled licences , mines is a very antiquated green and about the size of an A4. But there again half of it is in welsh, which might account for the size.
I have a list of vehicles I am licenced to drive , ranging from A1 motorbike to D+E bus with trailer adjacent to B+E car with trailer It is dated 93.
Just been back on the DVLA portal front page first tab it says licence valid from 98, second tab categories of vehicles licenced to drive are all dated 93.
At least now I know I'm right , so can go and tell the insurance company they are misinformed. Shall also ring DVLA tomorrow and tell them what I think of their system and request further confirmation to forward on. Warning to all. Don't let the insurance company accuse you of lying.0 -
That licence was issued in, and valid from, 1998 (a replacement for an earlier licence), but you have been licensed - held a licence - since 1993.0

you tell my insurance company that.
