    You can't change the DD amount on an ad hoc basis.

    Let the DD take, then manually pay £1 - or set up a standing order for it.

    Just ensure the £1 is paid after the DD is taken.

    And do you recommend I keep the cards (Aqua and Capital One) open at a zero balance? Or physically close the account.

    Keep them open and use them regularly/occasionally to keep them active.

    You only have a £1200 limit on the Barclaycard, which is very low.
