Freezer door left open over night

When I got up this morning I noticed the freezer door was not properly shut last night.
Got some water on the floor (small amount) and Icicles hanging from the freezer draws.
I checked the food and it seems like it is still frozen ish... don't know what to do really.
I got diced chicken in there, thinking of throwing that away just in case. Probably the ice cream as well looks like it has melted a bit

I should be able to keep the chips and frozen veg right?

I don't know what to do with the following items:
Burgers
Faggots
Sausages
Fishfingers
Chicken pie
Birds eyes southern fried chicken
Ice lollies

Good thing I got such a small freezer really and it wasn't full.

As long as they are still solid, you should be OK. It's happened to me a couple of times and none of us are dead!

Bin the ice-cream - it can give a really nasty tummy even if partially melted and refrozen. Cook the chicken if it hasn't already been cooked and then it can be re-frozen . (If it has already been cooked and had defrosted then eat it).

If otherwise the stuff is still frozen hard I'd probably just put the freezer on fast freeze now and get on with using it normally. But chicken, seafood and icecream are particular worries.

Yes. The thing with food poisoning bugs is that they multiply best in a warmish range (5 degrees centigrade - 60 centigrade off the top of my head). As long as the diced chicken is reasonably solid, it is likely to still be too cold. By getting the freezer back to its normal temperature quickly, any bugs that have started to multiply will stop again. As long as you cook it really well, it should be OK.

But if it makes you happier, bin it!

    Hi :)

I've added your post to an earlier thread which has lots of advice. between them they cover everything that you have in your freezer.

Good luck with the salvage :)

We had a two day power cut at new year. We didn't open the freezers and the only things we chucked were the sausages (had a nasty incident with sausages years ago, so not worth the risk). Everything else was still hard and we ate them with no ill effect.

  • I keep leaving my freezer door slightly open (sign of my age) so I fitted a lightweight sprung door closer from my local DIY shop to my freezer, may not be the prettiest thing in the kitchen but when you let go the door it slams shut with avengence no more ruined food, anyone interested I'll email you a photo of how I did it:
