Had and minor collision that i was not aware of

Found around a 5 inch scratch on the rear side of my car today after i came home.Thinking back i had a few close calls when i was reversing back from a very narrow road with closely parked cars. I can honestly say i would not have been aware if i had hit something due to the minor damage, but if it did happened it was probably on that road.

I have reported to the police fearing that if i did hit some ones car, somebody would report it as their were a lot of people in that area and they would treat it as a hit and run. How do you think the police will proceed with this?

  • Ask the Police.
  • I will, just asking here to see if people have had similar experiences or have any knowledge of how police would deal with such cases. I guess i can just wait and see what they to with the accident report i gave them.

If the police have or get a report of a non stop collision in that road they may look at your report further. If not then it will just be filed.

How on earth do you make a 5 inch scratch and not know about it? Surely you must have heard it?

I wonder if the OP had the radio/CD player on? @lovinituk

A few near misses with the radio playing?! Sounds like a quality driver!!
  • It was a very light scratch so didn't really notice anything. Was not playing radio or anything.

The OP did not necessarily cause the scratch.
I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.

If you grazed a car you would not have a 5 inch very light scratch, you would have big fat long streaks of the other cars colour on your car or white if it was clear coted, which most cars are these days.

A scratch like that is more likely to be a person walking too close to your car and a zipper catching it or perhaps you brushed against a stiff branch.
Either way if its a single scratch and light then a good polishing compound will rid you of it.

You have already done enough to discharge your obligation as you have reported the RTC to the Police. Assuming no one was injured which I can't really see happening if it was as described then the police will take no further action. You might however end up with an insurance claim if the other car owner tracks you down but given that you are not even sure who or what you hit I doubt that will happen.
