Chip & PIN, a waste of time??

Hello,

first post but I think it it will worry a few people.

last week I stayed at a hotel in Cheshire, booked over the internet and paid in full on arrival, we checked out 4 days later and paid an outstanding balance of £1.75 for a 'phone call using my Lloyds TSB debit card.
Days later, when checking my bank online I discovered that the hotel had taken an additional £10 using the same debit card after I had left.
The hotel has explained that they had undercharged me for my stay, on checking the original booking I agree, BUT! how on earth can they take money from my account without me being present?
Lloyds TSB say that any vendor that I have used my card with can access the account for up to 180 days after the event.
This means that anybody using their debit card risks having more money taken without the use of Chip & PIN.
I am awaiting further response from Lloyds TSB....

comments and thoughts please, I am not going to use my card anymore until things are clarified.

So how do you think that retailers do orders over the phone?
Well life is harsh, hug me don't reject me.
  • The hotels precharge your card ... And they have systems in place where they can charge you without you present. How else are they going to collect charges from people who book rooms, dont cancel and dont turn up ?

The Citibank debit card is chip & pin only, will be refused for manual transactions, might be worth investigating?

    Cheers, Des.

So totally useless for online and postal ordering!
  • When you buy over the 'fone, you are usually asked for the security code from the rear of the card, my point was and still is that they did it when I was not present and after I had cleared my bill, they had my 'fone number, all it took was a call to clarify.
On other occasions I have had my card swiped and rejected, paid with cash and then found that the cash had already gone from the card, the bank will say that the dispute is with the vendor.
Anyway, I still await clarification from Lloyds TSB.

This is nothing to do with C&P, merchants such as hotels have always been able to make the same 'customer not present' transactions.

I'd be very surprised if Citibank's debit card was any different from the others in this respect.

Why would you use a debit card for online and postal ordering ;)

    Cheers, Des.

AFAIR the citibank card refuses manual transactions. Seems to refuse some other transactions as well from the discussion in the current account board.

I don't use one myself so I could have got the wrong end of the stick.

    Cheers, Des.

To be honest, the odds of you failing to claim back monies fraudulantly obtained from a business with which you've had dealings with in the past 6 months is small. I think, perhaps, you are reading too much into this.
    Conjugating the verb 'to be":
-o I am humble -o You are attention seeking -o She is Nadine Dorries
