Northern Ireland Car Insurance - Price Hikes?

Hi All,

Has anyone noticed price hikes in insurance for cars, my renewal has jumped from £280 last year to £590 this year on a like for like basis.

I queried this with Hughes who advised the market was tough at the moment.

Does anyone have any advice on where is competitive for Northern Ireland car insurance?

Thanks

    Huh. Mine does that annually.
I then call the insurer and get it brought down again...
This year there was actually a reason (no-fault claim being processed), but usually it's just "because".
    That's Direct Line.

I think prices overall may be up a little this year, but if you have no changes/incidents to justify the hike, then they are just trying it on...

Apparently insurance has gone up because the companies can't make as much from your money as before. In the good old days, your payment could be relied on to make more money for the company through the stock market. Not in recent years.

    Shop around basically.

Theres a section on the main site on how to go about it.

You'll find also that once you find a quote for half that, your own insurance company will miraculously match it....

Mine went up by about £60, £172 to £236 with Legal & General. Cheapest online via Confused was £200 but miraculously Aviva were only £186 and a handy 60 quid cashback on that. Aviva have never been even ball-park competitive before, nearly didn't even bother getting a quote.

If you're just going to renew with your existing insurer you're exposing yourself to being ripped off. Go through the comparison sites in the order described on Martin's site. I haven't found local companies that competitive.

I'm sorting my father's car insurance at the minute. His renewal for this year is £1900 up from £440. I know he is 81 but seriously, I just think they were making no money from him so are making it impossible for him to renew with them. I have got it for £420 elsewhere.

Auto renewing without keeping the company on their toes is not a good idea.

Hughes are gangsters, they were sold also so they are not the same company which would explain the difference in pricing structure.

Did you try Axa or Open and Direct? They always beat Hughes etc for me.

I got points earier this year so a little worried that I'll be stung for it come renewal in October!

How many years after a motor insurance claim does it 'drop off' your insurance premium? Is it 5?

Having an argument about it in the office, help me out here :rotfl:

Really depends on the insurance company you are getting a quote from. They ask have you had a claim in X years. They decide on X, but 5 seems to be about average. There's isn't to my knowledge a register of claim different insurance companies can access.
Edit there's a database called CUE they can check.
