I really want to go vegan again BUT milk substitutes have always been a problem for me. I get through gallons of the white stuff in tea, coffee and on its own but just cannot get on with plant based alternatives.

I'd love to find one that tastes like milk, and has added calcium, iron and Vit D. Ideas?

I spent ages looking for the holy grail of milk for proper-job lattes -

    Oatly Barista

This stuff is great - really frothy and creamy.
    :hello:
  • Coconut milk, hemp milk or almond milk are my preferred milks.

    Avoid soy at all costs.

It's such a personal thing. All I can say is I generally use Morrisons's 59p sweetened soya milk for almost everything. It's neither too creamy nor too watery, doesn't have a beany taste, and is cheap.

I've never tried hemp milk, but might give it a go based on recommendations above.

Thanks all. Rice milk, any sweetened milk, almond milk (which weirdly I find salty) - bleuh. Will buy in some unsweetened soya next time I'm in Aldi.

Will give Oatley a go next time I visit a mainstream SM.

I reckon the worst one I've ever tried is Lidl's "Soja" brand - horrible beany taste and way too thick and creamy for tea / cereal.

I use almond milk on my porridge, and a mix of soya / almond in my tea.

I use cow's in my coffee cos i can't get anything to not curdle in coffee (not a vegan, just cut back on dairy)

I buy alpro unsweetened or Aldi
I wanna be in the room where it happens

Plants milks vary a lot between brands, not like cow's milk which all seems basically the same to me. Personal tastes are going to vary too, but this is what I've found.

I use the cheap Sainsbury's brand unsweetened soy milk in cooking, but for drinking it has a slightly odd taste - but I don't notice this in cooking. The Alpro 'original' and 'mild and light' taste good for drinking and cereal. Read the labels carefully though if you're going to make something savoury with it, they often have sweeteners (not just sugar, also apple concentrate, for example) or vanilla flavouring, none of which taste good in savoury food. I've messed up a few times with this.

Rice milk is nice, quite sweet, but also very light and thin. Might suit someone who is used to skimmed milk.

Hemp milk all tastes like stale cardboard to me, but some people really like it.

Oat milk is really nice, the oatly brand is closest I've found to cow's milk in taste and texture.

Almond milk seems to always be quite bitter.

The koko coconut milks were intensely sweet - despite not having much more sugar than other plant milks. Too sweet for me to drink a glass or put on cereal, but I'm going to try them out for making sweet drinks as maybe I can use less sugar then?

Cashew milk is nice, smooth and creamy.

All plant milks have consistently been bad for making white coffee or tea however. They're a lot like skimmed milk, you pour them in and they just kind of vanish. It's a bit pointless really. Soy cream however makes excellent white coffee/tea.

I use Alpro unsweetened almond milk for everything, oat milk if the almond is out of stock.

Thats what I used last time (over 5 years ago now!). Passable but not brilliant in tea though. Better in coffee.
