Birth certificates are ONLY available directly from the official records office, for about £9-10.

Subscriptions do not give access to that sort of records, they'd just have the name/quarter of the birth listed and no more.

No money saving can be done in getting a replacement certificate.

Use the local office where the birth was registered as that might be a few pennies cheaper than the central office.

The ref number is not a replacement certificate. You can order a replacement cert with out the ref number :

    http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

Costs abt £9.50 or go to your local Reg office.

If you know where he was born and the date you just need to apply to that local registry office
