Upright Vax Carpet washer issue

Yesterday whilst using a Vax carpet washer I turned it on and there was a crack' sound followed by a burning smell. I turned it off at once. When I switched it on again it started up with just the normal noise and continued to work normally. But, the 2 rollers with brushes on are not turning automatically. They are not stuck as they turn when I push it but they should be turning as they clean the carpet. To make matters worse I had borrowed it from a friend who has only had it about 6 months.
I have rung a repair place who have said its £45 to have it looked at. If its repairable they take that of the cost of the job. If it s not repairable then its dead money. They are only around £85 new so Im wondering if I should just get them a new one.
Any advice as to what may be the problem please.

Drive belt has probably snapped and just needs a replacement0

Getting to and replacing a drive belt on an upright vac or shampoo jobby is usually a single screwdriver job and very easy. The belt itself, and I totally agree that's what it's likely to be, will be about £5 off ebay.
I'm sure if you google Vax.....shampooer belt change, there will be a youtube guide for you so you can judge how easy it could be to save £50 or so, :money::money:I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
Thank you very VERY much. Can always rely on these forums.0

If you don't want to DIY you could find another repair centre. One near us doesn't charge for an estimate ,if you take the cleaner to their premises.0
