How do I find out what type of Memory I have

Yes OK, I'm probably going to look like Mr Thicky now but I need help.
If it's using a PC I'm fine, but open the damn thing up or ask me anything technical and I'm at a complete loss.

I want to double my memory from 512, but need to find out which type of memory I have. I don't have any documentation that came with the PC (it was a cheap build your own off the net), so I can't look on there. DDR rings a bell, but I can't be sure and believe there are different types anyway.
I can't find anything in the Control Panel to help me. Where do I find out what I need to know, to ensure I buy the right additional memory?

Help appreciated.
