DLA to PIP application! DLA end date looming anyway! No PIP decision made as yet!

Hello all.

I am hoping for some help. I was claiming Job Seekers Allowance until my Wife had a stroke in April 2014. From that date I had to claim Income Support and Carers Allowance as she was awarded DLA until 19th July 2016 where it would be re-assessed we supposed.

During March this year she had the "dreaded letter" saying she had to claim PIP. The form was completed and returned. There appears to be a delay in her getting an assessment from ATOS as it has to be a home assessment as she is house bound. Apparently there is a shortage of assessors that visit homes hence the delay. There is every possibility that her assessment may not be completed by the time her DLA ends on the 19th July.

So, Ladies and Gentlemen, I am unclear as to what happens if that is the case.

What happens to our Income Support? Does it also end on the 19th July as there would be technically no DLA? Do we have a temporary return to JSA while waiting for the PIP decision?

What happens to the Carers Allowance? Does that also end on the 19th July as there is, again, no DLA?

I would certainly appreciate any help. We are already going into panic mode a little.

Finally I am debt free but only due to a redundancy payment. But still a pretty good feeling!

  • AFAIK DLA will remain in payment (and the other benefits) until a decision is made.

This is from a government information leaflet:
"If you are not awarded PIP, your DLA will
stop being paid 28 days after your next
payday following the decision on your PIP claim"

I think (since you have completing the PIP forms) your DLA payments continue untill the PIP decision is made.
But I would check with your local CAB that this is the case.

As long as you have done everything regarding your PIP claim in the timescale you were given, your DLA award will be extended if a decision has not been made about the PIP. This happens automatically, you don't have to do anything about it.
