Buying via the New Homes Group

I've had an offer accepted on a house which is being sold via a 'help to buy' scheme. The current owners are buying a new build and the builders have appointed New Homes Group to market their property in order to help them sell quicker and then purchase their new build.
I want to use my usual solicitor to deal with the conveyancing but I'm now told that the New Homes Group will only deal with solicitors who are approved for their 'panel'?
How can this be? Surely I have a right to use whatever solicitor I like. After all, I have no contract with New Homes Group, that's an arrangement between them and the current owners of the property?!
