How do you crack or chip a diamond? It is (one of) the hardest substances in the world! I would suggest it is/was faulty.
Because inferior quality diamonds have natural occlusions (faults) which make them susceptible to fracturing. That the jeweller's charge for the cost of the replacement diamond and the work involved in resetting it is only £200 indicates that this is definitely not a high quality diamond which would be expected to withstand an impact.0
