PPI reclaim Confusion

I am very confused. I had quite a few (and im not proud) loans a few years ago and I know that I was told I had to have the PPI or they wouldn't give me any money. I have read lots about reclaiming PPI but I still cannot work out how I start or who I contact. I still have some of the ref/loan numbers but not all and would love to be able to try to reclaim the PPI in order to pay off the remaining loans. If I talk to my bank they don't seem to know what I am talking about as my bank never leant me any it was all through different firms and credit cards so a simple guide to where I start would be most appreciated. Thanks
