Failed IVA has affected default date

Myself and my husband were badly advised with regards to an IVA resulting in it failing as the creditors rejected the offer, this was March 2011. We have written to one company in particular as the default shows as being really late on our credit file and won't drop off until November 2017 whereas we are hoping to get a mortgage next August, they have advised that the 3 - 6 months that creditors normally have to register a default was re started after the failed IVA which is why it was so late, 6 months after we originally defaulted would have been May 2011. Is this reasonable as it seems very unfair, to clarify and before anyone judges we have been trying really hard to pay off all these debts once we got back on our feet financially.

    Hi

The default should have been marked on your credit file within 6 months of your original default, unless you had a payment arrangement agreed with the creditor prior to the IVA. I don't see why making an IVA proposal would re-start this.

Ask the creditor to correct it. If they don’t you can complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) and Information Commissioner’s Officer (ICO).
