HP Photosmart C3180. Keeps displaying out of paper warning

My HP Photosmart Model C 3180 will not print. The message out of paper keeps being displayed but that is not the case. I have checked for obvious paper jams but none are apparent. I have made sure the rollers at the back work. I have switched the printer off and unplugged. The carriage with the cartridges moves OK and just in case I have put in new cartridges as they will no use if I need to buy another printer. There does seem to be a kind of "Whirring" sound when I try to print/photocopy. It does still scan documents OK. Any help and suggestion please that might solve the problem.

It could be the paper sensor stuck or broken. This advice from the HP website: -
This sensor can be checked by removing the rear access door and looking at the ceiling of the printer between the first two rollers from the left. It is rather small but basically the way it works is just like a lever. The paper passes through to push it up letting the printer know that there is paper. It will trigger a paper jam if the printer detects that it should already be down based on the length of the paper. Check if this "lever" is there and is not stuck pushed to the ceiling of the printer.0 -
That's good advice, but if it does not work, go to the HP Support site:
http://support.hp.com/gb-en/products/printers/
- and look for your printer. There are 3 models of the C3180, 2 are Deskjet A's and one is the All-in-One. Mkae sure you have the correct one and type it into the Search box. I have a > 6 year old Photosmart C5380 and HP have always given me updates to drivers, etc., via their site.
Try the "Troubleshooting" section.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

I tried HP support to solve a similar problem which it did not solve. As my machine was about 6 or 7 years old I took the decision to go and buy a new one which cost roughly £35 . The expensive part is the cartridges.0

We had an apparent problem with our HP Printer which turned out not a be a faulty printer issue but a PC driver problem which we were told was overloaded We contacted HP support chat who were most helpful. They resolved the issue after a while the problem being solved with them using remote access and the printer is working fine again.0

First thing I would try is blasting a full can of air duster down all the "nooks and crannies" where the paper goes.
Sometimes these issues are caused by crud on the sensors.0
