I tend just to invent any-old-answer to this sort of malarkey.

    Not insurance proposals though? :)

I tend just to invent any-old-answer to this sort of malarkey. I look forward keenly to being asked about my "gender". Will there be a box for feeling sexually attracted to fish? Goats?

That's sexuality, not gender. Whether you're male, female, intersex, binary, gender-fluid or aqueer there is nothing to prevent you feeling attracted to any kind of barnyard animal you like. Note however that there are laws in the UK which you might fall foul of if you try to follow through on that attraction.

    Well, you're wrong.

As Dunstohn suggests, it's because the FCA lays down rules and some firms are more onerous in their interpretations than others. If you want to punish them for that, fine, but don't call out the tin-foil hat brigade in the process; it doesn't help anyone.

10 years of working for a high street bank, and being constantly bombarded with head office memos reminding me never to miss a sales opportunity, and never to miss an opportunity to update info on customers that might lead to sales in the future kinda makes me think i'm right.

The FCA guidelines just give them an excuse to be even more intrusive than ever.

Unfortunately for them the ICO rules on data governance / protection means the information requested / captured must be appropriate and relevant for the purpose for which it is intended. The ICO is very much public body focussed but I believe it covers all aspects of good data governance.

With regard to the OP, it sounds like the marital status is not relevant at the point of opening the account. It might be that Sainsbury's IT system is configured to collect it at that point but it is not relevant to opening an account.

Re the comment for a current account and debt information, that is obviously very relevant.
