Free Web Hosting

Options
;)

Hi, I am a new member to the forum. I have built a web site using Serif Web Plus 8. for our Classic Austin Car Club, we are a group of Austin A40 Owners, and have formed a small group in the Midlands. The Web Site is very basic, no shopping cart, no e mail needed, nothing fancy (yet)
I am looking for someone to host the site, very willing to put an advert on the site for for free hosting. I own the domain https://www.eastmidlandsa40group.com

Thanks, billa40

    Si.
  • I use Heart Internet.

Completely free, no ads, easy to use and loads of features free to use like web templates, add discussion boards, newsletter sign up etc.

    I wouldn't use anyone else.

I built my site from one of their templates (I was a complete novice beforehand).

  • Personally I love https://www.webnow.com. We pay the equivelent of $9.99 a year for our site, with 12 pages! I was as green as grass when I built it from one of thier templates, and have even built more for our customers.

Our web address comes vis oneandone.co.uk , we pay £15 for two years redirection on four domain names, including redirection email addresses.

So, website for $9.99 + redirection (1 year, one URL) £3.75 = one year's web advertising for less than £10!

One tip with webnow is to sign up for the very basic package ($9.99 as I said), and just add on pages over the basic 3 as custom pages, the template explains how to do this, for free!

If you don't want to pay (webnow don't take financial details in advance), set up the full site of around 16 pages including a photo page, and walk away. With no financial details, webnow will threaten to pull your site or delete the pages not paid for, and lock you out of editing after 7 days (so you have to make sure you are completely happy witht the content before 7 days are up) .

And yet 90% of the time they do nothing, as you have created a copywrite site and to delete or alter it would breach this.

I have created sites like these for other people which are still up some 2 years later!

Oh, and you can get free redirectable 0700 phone numbers at DMclub.net. these come at no cost to you, but the person calling pays national call rate, BUT the numbers are often mistaken for free call numbers. As long as you don't advertise tham as such, you are OK.

I would just say be cautious about free webspace - I previously had a free website with a company that disappeared overnight, taking my webpage with it!

Very inconvenient when over 75% of my new business comes via the internet.....

Have you checked with your ISP as very often you get so much free web space?

I just pop in now and then.... :)

  • Good point about free webspace, though I would like to think it's rare to have a host disappear overnight. I have been with webnow for seven or eight years, since I was first on the internet.

A redirectable web address is a must in this case, if your actual site drops off the web, it can be redirected to any site in minutes.

This has happened to us due to sites being down, and for the sake of continuity you can knock up a temporary site with somewhere like Geocities in minutes. Not very professional, granted, but better than nothing at all. It may be best to do this in advance, as free sites like Geocities (via Yahoo) will just sit on the web until you cancel them, as will your internet's provider's site.

After all, most visitors will find you via search engines and it's with them your redirectable address will be registered.

Oh! I just remembered a FREE redirectable URL provider - https://www.cjb.net . If you go this route, you get a cjb.net URL. You register any name you like, and it will come out like this eg https://www.johnsmith.cjb.net, and also has free matching email address eg sales@johnsmith.cjb.net. Cjb.net say that there is advertising on the redirect, but I haven't noticed any and have been using the service for years.

  • I have just created a free site in about 10 mins, but I had the page on file on my computer This would be good for an emergency, the web page was simply created in Word and saved as a html file (select this when saving the document. When you go to the page, it forst goes to a plain page called 'index'. You can get round this by setting the redirection directly to your instant free cjb website

Here are the addresses (remember I just knocked this together as an example)

http://specialdeliverytransport.cjb.net - the address you will hand out

http://users.cjb.net/specialdeliverytransport/website-frequently%20asked%20questions.htm - the actual address you should redirect to, if you want to avoid the 'index' page.

When you first got to https://www.cjb.net all the page is a box to register a URL. After you do this, it will take you directly to the page to host your website and in turn upload a site. As long as you have prepared a page on you computer in advance, this will take only minutes.

You can then go on to register email addresses. ALL FREE, no money involved at all. Not even credit card details needed.
