Accepted then declined by Aqua... Confused

in Credit cards
I applied for an aqua advance credit card online and then got an acceptance letter through the the door - I had to sign and date the credit agreement and return to them.
A week later I have recieved a letter with a differant reference no that says "our records show you have held another card provided by new day for less than 12 months. We cannot process an additional card for you at this time"
I think that my first application is successful and somehow a second application has registered and declined - I hope so anyway but this really is not clear

Which other credit card have you got which is less than 12 months? may be its part of the New day who is financing aqua card. some store cards are part of new day. you can not have 2 cards from new day in less than 12 months.Aqua Advance £ 9500 ( Settled ) | BC Platinum Card 25/25 £10500 | 24 studio £1950 | SimplyBe £1800 | Nationwide Flexplus A/C OD £800| Meaningless Noddles score= 3/50

I contacted Aqua today and they told me that there was two applications within 2 minutes of each other. So one has been accepted and a card is on the way and the other obviously got declined. I argued that it was their computer error and they argued that it was mine.
They agreed to remove the credit search from my credit file as a good will gesture but for some reason they were adamant they could not provide me this in writing0
