Buying a house without a garage?

Looking at some potential houses tomorrow, however a new house has come onto the market which would suit me perfectly for size, location and price. The only thing is they have converted the garage into a room which could be perfect for my daughters playroom but that leaves me with no where to store essential, tools, bikes and garden equipment.

There is a shed in the back garden but it looks a bit small and lightweight. Wondering if anyone has been in a similar position and bought a big shed or storage unit which is a good size and very secure?

If i could locate something like that i would be possibly very interested in this house.

You get good sturdy wooden sheds. I had a 16x10ft one in my last house and it did my business, storage of lawnmowers, expensive mountain bikes, chainsaws, strimmers, chemicals, etc.

I wouldn't be overly worried, as long as there's space to put something up.

What's security like if you go with the shed route?

A shed could work, if the garden is big enough for it not to take it over, and if there's side access eg for bikes

We have been in our house 11 months now, and our garage was converted into a living space with kitchen/loo (think the granny lived in it for a while!)

Anyway, could you have the playroom in the house rather than the garage? I know I would prefer my children in the house rather than out in the garage. I assume the one you are talking of is attached with a door to the house?

It might be easier to just turn it back into a garage rather than get a shed?

Just buy a shed with strong lock, perhaps a metal one, maybe a security light on it. Most garages have pathetic locks anyway so i doubt your stuff woudl be any safer. Most people round where I live use their garages for storing pretty much anything but a car. Either its for junk (judging by what you see if the door is open when you go by), or the two most common conversions are (a) a whole room (as your prospective house) and (b) half of it a utility room (knocked through into house if no door) and front half general storage.

Alternatively, as said, it wouldn't take much to turn it back into a pseudo garage you could use for storage or even a small room (study maybe?) plus a storage area.
  • I never park my car in the garage anyway but a garage is good for storage, i.e bikes, paint, tools the usual stuff thats why i need something bigger than a normal 6x3 wooden shed.

I've seen couple of metal sheds a bit bigger so i'm going to view the house as the layout barring the garage is perfect for me, as is the location and price.

I'll have a good look at the garden to make sure a bigger shed does not take up to much room...

Brodco do some good "sheds", they are really secure and solidly built.

    Not cheap though.

Didn't that take up too much room? Wouldn't it have been better in the garden?

I was after somewhere with a garage but nowhere appealed except the place I bought which doesn't have a garage. It does, however, have a brick buiit outbuilding, a small shed, a large shed !!! workshop and a greenhouse.
I thought "Well, what would I actually put in the garage? That's right - "stuff". The outbuilding, shed, etc will accommodate all my "stuff" so I don't really need a garage as well."
    So I bought it. ;)

Sheds come in lots of different sizes.

I recommend buying from a local place that makes them, rather than the ones the likes of Homebase and B&Q sell, as they're often of better quality.

We bought an 8' x 6' shed from a local place a few years ago for £350, and it's still going strong. It's really sturdy. For an extra £50, they delivered and assembled it. We just had to prepare the base, so we got some old sleepers for it to stand on.
