£130 a month is good, somebody near me was quoted over £300 for a month from local pharmacy. New injection to treat addisons has been released and they are transferring over to that. Speak to your vet

We are sorry to report that the manufacturer has unexpectedly and without warning increased the price of the product by over 800%.

We had a dog with Addison's disease who lived 10 years post diagnosis, so I understand how reluctant you might be to change something that's working.

It seems the licence expired on Florinef and hasn't been renewed by the manufacture as they've developed Zycortal - which is an injectable alternative licensed for animal use.

IIRC - It's an injection every 25 days, administered by the vet (at least in the first instance), plus a prednisolone tablet every day (and a joint supplement as prednisolone damages joints long term).

Dogs will need to be weened of the Florinef over a few days, with vet monitoring, so it could be very expensive short term, but the prednisolone and supplements can be bought fairly cheaply online once you know the dose.

Let us know how it goes?
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

Thanks all i will keep you updated :)
  • We didn't want to transition as our dog is 10.5 years old, and has lived nearly 7 of those on Florinef. It's not perfect, but she's older so we didn't see the point to disrupting her regimen. Our vet thought there would be a generic available at near-old-Florinef pricing, but it looks like this will not be the case. So, we will shortly transition to the injection as the Florinef cost would be too high for us (she takes 13 tablets a day, so a jar every 7 and a bit days, ie. about £400-500 a month on new Florinef pricing).

I wish many bad things on Aspen Pharma (the new licence-holder) for seeking to profiteer from sick dogs. I am also appalled that the government has allowed it.
