They don't. Each lender will have their own criteria, but there will be certain similarities. Three-month-late payments are almost certainly programmed into many lenders' systems to ensure "computer says no".

Exactly. The criteria vary. A two year old late payment is definitely not an automatic decline.

Just thought I'd update to say that the company involved have agreed to remove the late payment markers! This should happen within 10 working days, so hopefully when I go to try and buy a car my credit history will now meet their criteria.
