I have half of a large stone built victorian house which is on three stories so has some high windows. It has four bedrooms. I have a quote to have all the exterior woodwork painted and generally repaired where needed (putty etc). The quote is £2,350, broken down into £2,100 labour and £250.00 materials. The company told me it would take two people one week.

Is this reasonable or not?

PS I am in West Yorkshire near Leeds

Its very high on the labor, but 3 storey - can it be done on normal ladders or will they need a scaffold? If ladders then I'd expect to be able to do a house woodwork in about 3 days with 2 of us, that's rubbing down, primer/undercoat and top coat, inc fascia's / sofits / bargeboards. Unless its a humungus house and the woodwork needs loads of filling and repairing or something. We'd probably ask £1000 labor and be very happy with that. Painters don't get paid plumbers or spark'y rates unless they are exceptionally good and very fast.

They said they could just about do it with ladders, no scaffold. It did seem quite a high quote to me. Thank you for you feedback.

Impossible to say if its accurate or not. How many windows?. Are the windows casements ,Boxframe sliding sashes?. Most good decorators will take down the guttering so they can paint all of the fascias. Are there any bargeboards?, cast iron guttering or plastic? Doors?........

Lots of info needed to get a true idea of what the costs would be .... I'm not a decorator but I do know that if repairs are needed then they need spot priming and then 2 undercoats (minimum) and then at least 1 top coat..

The labour is high for 2 men for 1 weeks work.....Decent decorators around (South East)here charge between £120-150 a day..
  • I think it depends where you live, I was quoted £6000 in greater London for a similar house.
