            Bowlhead thanks for the insightful reposte (as always) despite the heavy dose of sarcasm.
 My friend would not expect me to give him investment advice and nor would it be offered, my apologies if my post came across as such. I am no in no way recommending that he takes a DIY approach I was purely trying to suggest something he could monitor as a comparison as he is the sort that will need some some kind of trigger before entering the minefield that is trying to find a good IFA.
 The dummy portfolio VLS suggestion was given as something simple for him to use as comparison as I felt it would at least give him some feel as to what the markets were doing given their Index links, however I take your point regarding the differences in fund focus and that it would be an imperfect comparison even if the equity bond mix was broadly the same.0
