How long should an uncontested will take to process?

I have been left an amount in a will by a neighbour I used to look after. He died 29th June 2015 and had organised, through a solicitor, all arrangements for all the contents of his bank and post office accounts to be transferred to me.
He had no family or friends, no property just some savings in the bank and some in the Post Office and everything seemed very straight forward. 12 months later I still have received nothing but excuses from the solicitor e.g. probate office lost the will, waiting to be signed off by bank and the latest is that I will have to wait another 2 months for the 'expiry date in the London Gazette!!!???'.
Whatever that means.
Am I being given the runaround? It all seems to be very complex for a seemingly simple arrangement.

Executors are allowed a year to deal with the estate. Even so the solicitor seems to be dragging their feet.

Expiry date in the London Gazette is two months after the solicitor has posted a notice advertising for creditors.

No, I don't know why it wasn't posted nearly a year ago, either.
