Travelling to Elounda Crete - any tips?

Hi everyone,
Just after a bit of advice please. My friend and I due to travel to Elounda in Crete in a few weeks time for one week. We got a really cheap deal through Teletext and it's a much needed break for my friend who has been working her socks off to pay back all the debt she amassed when we graduated.
Anyway, I digress. The reason for this post is because I have read in various guide books since that Elounda is the most expensive resort in Crete  Ahhhhh! And now I feel really bad because it was me that suggested Elounda in the first place, just what my cash strapped friend needs. And I know I should have done a bit more research before booking, but..........oh what the heck, I have no excuse, I just should have done.
So, if any of you have any of you have been here and can offer tips on what to do whilst there, how to cut costs, how much money to take, what to avoid etc, it would be really helpful.
Thanking you all in advance.

Hi, we stayed at the neighbouring resort of Ag Nik but travelled by bus to Elounda the fare on the bus is about 1 euro much better value than a taxi. Ag nik has plenty of places to eat and drink and is a pretty resort as well. Elounda is lovely and we travelled there for our dinner on a couple of occasions. No Matter what you do there will be critics.0

ok - it might be the most expensive in Crete, but you'll still find it cheap by our standards. Here are a few tips to make your money go further.
If your on b&b eat a good breakfast, if not stock up on good local products, and buy where the locals buy. Buy a picnic lunch rather than eating in a restaurant. Pack a flask/water bottle/soft coolbag and take with you. You'll get envious looks on the beach and save yourself loads on cold soft drinks. When eating out avoid the swanky tourist places and look in the backstreets where the locals eat. Not only will the food be much better, so will your pocket. Frontline bars/restaurants always costs more - but are great for a drink/icecream and people watching. Wandering around will make you much more likely to find the 'hidden gems' we're all looking for.
Beware organised trips, they're usually not worth it and you can do it yourself for less. But also be wary of anyone offering something that sounds too good to be true - it is!
Storing food in hotel rooms is best avoided, (unless you have a fridge), it attracks ants and bugs. But a bottle of your favorite tipple might just start the evening (or afternoon) off nicely!
Above all, relax and enjoy you'll have a great time.0 -
