PPI company has changed name

Options
Can anyone help with a speculative question here? after about a year of to-ing and fro-ing I received £180 PPI refund back from a finance company through a company called Conclusive Finance, I went to their website to pay them their commission and they were in the process of updating, I tried ringing only to get through to an insurance company who knew nothing about them. So after many tries to get through to pay them and assumed they had gone out of business. Now about 2 months later I have been sent a bill from a company with a similar address and a different name. Should I pay them? Do I have to pay them? Any advice would be welcome.

Companies do change name. Mergers, acquisitions and branding changes. If this is a genuine change then existing contracts will still apply. If its a third party trying it on (so no link between old and new) then they have no commercial right.

Only pay if you DON'T want debt collectors and a trashed credit rating.

Conclusive Financial Ltd, company number 08463668, still exists

Real Life Services Ltd, company number 05207741 also exists.

It is perfectly possible that the former has decided to get out of the business, and sold it's debtors onto the latter. But if the latter is demanding payment, I would want to see some proof that they are indeed entitled to the money.

It still exists on the Companies House record and the MOJ still lists it as authorised.

Absolutely. In fact, I would expect the old firm, not the new one to tell you.

In the end, it is for the new business to prove you owe them.

It may be worth responding with a complaint that they are a business you have never heard of and are demanding money with no justification.

If necessary, you can then take it to the Legal Ombudsman for a decision. I say this because you do not want to pay the new firm only to find the old one is still out there and expecting payment.
