Getting Mugs Clean

Options
Hiya Folks

I wonder if you can help?

My friend that I am staying with has some old mugs which have lovely patterns outside but are all tea stained inside. She doesn't want to throw them out because they were gifts from friends and family when she moved in here. However, she feels that she cannot use them for folks as they are so stained!

Apart from bleaching them everyday anyone got any more environmentally and financially friendly ways of cleaning them?
Also, any advice on how to prevent mugs becoming stained in the first place would be appreciated!
Many thanks old stylers! :D

Those 'Magic Eraser' sponges are really good at removing stains from inside cups.

Not sure about the enviromentally friendly bit but baby sterilising tablets work well.

I use Steradent denture cleaning tablets to keep the inside of mugs clean. Fill the mug with hot or boiling water, drop a tablet in and leave it steeping overnight. The stains either wipe off, or come off with the gentlest scrub of the washing up brush.

I think Magic Erasers work using micro beads, so would be fairly bad environmentally

I've had denture tablets work, or salt or bicarb paste

A little salt and a drop of water rubbed around the inside gives a gleaming, stain free finish!

Just put a couple of teaspoons of washing powder in the mug. Dissolve in hot water and give them a good soak. Soak your teaspoons in there too.

My Mum used to use bi-carb on a sponge to clean melamine cups which were white inside. Cleans and deodorises.

I second the bicarb and a damp cloth or sponge suggestion. I do all of my mugs that way every few months and they always come out like new.

I use Aston**h tea and coffee stain remover. It is £1 for a carton and you only need a little to add to hot water in the cup or mug.

I used to use bleach but kept getting some on my clothes.
