Does anyone use their 1930's fireplace?

As others have said get a chimney sweep in. Not just for the sweep, but mainly for the advice and expertise. Tell him on the phone that's what you want so he doesnt just turn up and shoot off once he's cleaned it.
I think an open fire is the nicest thing in the world.
It would be a real shame to rip out the fireplace, so I'm glad you're not thinking of doing that.
Fires are pretty easy to light and look after. Just be sensible. Fireguard on it when you're not in the room. Sweep chimney every year or so. Then you'll have no problems.0 -

As long as you still have the firebricks around the sides and back, all you need is the grate to contain your fire (hopefully the original is still there).0
