Hi all
Sorry if this is a daft question but I am about to go through application to rent a flat
Is it acceptable to ask current landlord for a reference before giving notice?
Many thanks

Have you gone beyond the end of the fixed term?
Yes of course you can ask. Landlord does not have to give any reference, any more than a tenant has to give a reference for a landlord (ah, now there's a thought....)0 -
It is normal to ask for a reference before giving notice. Doing the opposite would easily leave you in a very awkward position...0

if your landlord wants rid of you they will give a glowing reference."Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many"0

Interesting idea ;-) tho my Landlord has been excellent so would be happy to give them a good reference to new tenant
I have been in property for 6 years and able to give one months notice. Pretty sure my reference would be good.
Just out of interest would I be told by letting agent if landlord refused to give reference or if it were a bad one?0 -
Strange that in 20+ years, I have only once been asked to give a ref.
That's approaching 30 tenants.--one stayed for 8 years.
So go for it before giving notice---why not?
As for letting agents--whatever you are told--take with a very large pinch of salt and deal with LL directly if at all possible.I am a LandLord,(under review) so there!:p0 -
Lets pretend I had a good tenant that I wanted to keep.
Someone phones looking a reference .I say Ah yes I know Mr & Mrs X .Reference em no comment .
I havent lied ."Do not regret growing older, it's a privilege denied to many"0
