Just from my elder son's experience:

do you have the same initials as anyone else in your household who may have an adverse credit rating?

Me & my eldest son share the same initials, and initially Natwest declinde him because of a "problem with your credit rating". Eventually they accepted that there may have been a mistake, and as a matter of principle he uses the full overdraft facility now & gets his Railcard every year!

Persevere - my other son has just opened 3 accounts - Coop (he has principles!), Natwest (railcard) & HSBC (presently has current account) but Halifax declined him.

Is there a reason you can't use one of the existing accounts or do you need a specific student one for the loan company ???

Why don't you just change your natwest current account into a student account.
