Hi all
We are spending a week in Northumberland in late June and want to see a bit of Newcastle.
Last time I was there was 1972:D. I expect it's changed a bit.
We like cultural things, museums, antiquities, pretty buildings etc. Parks, green areas as well or anything interesting or unusual. OH is fond of anything Roman. Happy to drive around (OH passed test in London 50 years ago) or sightseeing buses/metro. Not too good at walking long distances.
So, any interesting suggestions please
I will look on Trip Advisor but I like MSEers views as well
Thanks

Tynemouth is good for the Priory and it's on the coast. You can get there by Metro - the station itself is also interesting.
Sunderland Winter Garden and the adjacent museum are also good, both free entry.

Beamish Open Air Museum is a great day out (or it was when I went as a child, about 20ish years ago - even if the Victorian school master made me cry: I'm a leftie!)
There's also some good steam train journeys in that part of the world
Have a lovely holiday!:j0 -

It's changed loads, a lot of money has been spent on the place over the last 25-30 years or so.
For pretty buildings look at Grey Street, right in the town centre, if you're using the metro then get off at Monument (Grey's Monument).
For museums there's a few, Hancock, Discovery etc. Obviously it's good for an afternoon/night out too, I'd recommend the quayside area for this, but there's something for everyone.
Further afield, as someone has mentioned already, Sunderland's Winter Gardens are nice and worth a look, also if either of you like football you could check out the North East's only Premier League stadium while you're there (Sunderland's fantastic Stadium of Light). You can't help but miss Newcastle's local lower league side's stadium on the hill while you're visiting Newcastle's many attractions either.
Beamish is worth a look too, huge outdoor museum, huge scale, the size of a town.0 -

We have just come back from 4 nights in Whitley Bay. Highlights in Newcastle were The Great North Museum, Discovery Museum, Seven Stories, The Angel of the North and Saltwell Park (Gateshead).0

So Middlesbrough isn't in the North East then!
We stayed in The North York Moors last year. It wasn't a million miles from Middlesbrough. We probably won't be going back (Middlesbrough that is, not Yorkshire). Apologies to anyone who lives there.
Yorkshire, on the other hand, is amazing. It's got even more tea shops than Devon:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:0 -
As its now late June you may or may not have visited but, for Roman stuff try Arbeia in South Shields - free entry and very interesting. Also gorgeous new promenade and improvements to the beach front.0
