prepayment meter final bill

Hi all.

I currently have payment meters for my gas and electricity. I recently switched for Scottish power to OVO energy. I had a cheque because they owed me £20 for electricity. However I've had a letter saying I owe £250 for gas.

Can anyone tell me how it's possible to owe all that money when you have to put money on the meter to use the gas. I've gone through my receipts to see if they match up with what Scottish power say I've put on there and there isn't a discrepancie.

Thanks

Would think your meter has not been updated to current higher rate and is still set to lower rate. So you owe difference on leaving.
Worth a call to SP to see if they will do deal etc

If you don't know, you need to ask SP why it is they think you owe them £250

    There could be many reasons
    e.g.
    a) You had a debt preleaded to the meter that you haven't yet paid off (although I would have expected the new supplier to take this on if that was the case)
    b) Perhaps as suggested above, your tariff was not updated on the meter ... but £250 is a large sum for such, and most suppliers won't expect you to pay if that was the suppliers fault for failing to update the meter (depends if you've been regularly topping up)
    c) Possibly if you've not been topping up because you've not been using the gas, you have accrued standing charges (but again £250 is a lot - about 2 years worth at even the most expensive rates)
