How do you work out when the default date should be?

Hi I have an outstanding default showing on my credit file, I defaulted on a catalogue debt December 2010, yet the default on my credit file is dated November 2011, I understand that the rule of thumb is that the default date should be between 3-6 months of missing payments, is this the same for a catalogue??? The debt is now with a company called Lowell and the debt is showing in their name on my credit file, who should I write to to try and get the default date changed Lowell or Simply Be??
Thank you
