Dear Old Stylers,
I volunteer in a food bank, and it has occurred to me that it would be a good idea to write up simple recipes for clients, using what we have.
So..... I have got some ideas, but would love your input.
What we have:
Tins
Soup, beans, Spaghetti, Macaroni, tomatoes, sweetcorn, carrots potatoes, peas, green beans, cannelloni, kidney beans, butter beans, chickpeas, butter beans pinto beans black eyed beans, meatballs, hot dogs, spam, corned beef, mackerel, tuna, pilchards, sardines,
various tinned fruits
Dried foods:
lentils, pinto, couscous, pasta, rice, noodles, oats.
Also:
Jam, peanut butter, pasta sauce- tomato and carbonara, variety of biscuits, crisps, fruit juice
Milk, sugar.
Clients get a couple of each category, ie 2 soup, 2 beans, 2 tomatoes, 2 fish,2 meat, 1 cereal, 1 milk, 1 sugar, 1 tea or coffee. - Families and couples get proportionally more.
Extras:
Oil, ketchup, mayonnaise, salt, pepper, flour, marmite.
So far I have thought about:
Tuna and pasta bake, tuna and pasta salad, potato and hot dog salad, meatballs and spaghetti, 3 bean salad, rice and peas, rice and kidney beans, hot dog and pasta bake,
But have no idea - particularly interested in spam recipes? Or any other ideas.
Many thanks

Some of those recipes look awesome!
I am so making the lazyman's mushroom risotto from there next time I'm needing a no spend week! That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.
House Bought July 2020 - 19 years 0 months remaining on term
Next Step: Bathroom renovation booked for January 2021
Goal: Keep the bigger picture in mind...0 -
Corned beef... luxury! Have you seen the price of it lately! I swear knock-off sirloin from some bloke down the pub'd be cheaper
I've mixed instant mash with grated cheddar before as a cheese/potato pie. I eat it at that point .... no point creating more washing up putting it into a dish and browning it "just for me". You don't get extra points for presentation.
I also make a corned beef hash: corned beef, tin of spuds, chop/mix, splash of anything I've got, microwave until hot ... serve, with baked beans and/or grated cheese and/or splash of brown or red sauce.
This is pretty much how I eat most of the time to be honest.
Half a packet of 12p stuffing mix made up in a jug with boiling water, stir/leave/cover for 10 minutes, check consistency ... then nuke for 2-3 minutes and eat from the jug with a fork.
I'm such a peasant.0 -

I do something similar with tomato soup + dried onions + any random sausages I've got (e.g. frozen veggie ones, or tinned hotdogs, or ready-cooked cocktail sausages).
But ... all nuked. No point waiting longer than necessary0 -
Also, you can get tins of meatballs in tomato sauce, about 40p at Lidl. I like half a can of those microwaved with some rice. Often I'll leave it at that.... rather than going the whole hog and adding grated carrot or chopped peppers to it.
It all goes down the same way. It's about filling your belly with easy/tasty food in my world.... and those tinned meatballs in tomato sauce are like a "faux sweet & sour"0 -
Have you seen the recipes on Jack Monroe's website-http://cookingonabootstrap.com?0

When I did something similar, I googled "canned / tinned food recipes" and got loads!
We did some fairly specific recipes, but as you never know exactly what you're going to get, we also did some more general ones.
It's a good idea to cater for microwave only, hob only etc.0
