It depends what sort of cover you want, we are with petplan for the following reasons

    Life cover
    Claims don't increase premiums
    Dental is covered
    Many vets accept direct payment
Complementary treatment covered to a limit

We have claimed multiple times for our cat and dog, well the vet has, it has been straight forward and payments have been in a timely manner.

Remember if you wait until insurance has experied you will be uninsured for 28 days, so anything the pup has until the end of that period will be a pre-existing condition and therefore excluded from the policy, sometimes for a few years, sometimes for life.

    The types of cover available
    Public liability
    Accident and public liability
Annual policy (meaning any illness in that year will be a pre-existing condition the following year)
Lifetime, all conditions are covered for the life of the policy.

Just to point out, it's 14 days with Petplan, not 28 days, that you won't be covered for (if you do choose Petplan). I too am with them. More expensive but I've already had to claim for £400+ after only having my kitten a couple of months (and unfortunately he passed) so was worth it for me.

They have a terrible and persistent reputation for not paying out claims.
  • I'd recommend Petplan. I loved that they liaise with the vet directly. Courteous, helpful service and always paid out promptly. In this instance, you really do get what you pay for.

Vets don't accept direct payment so all treatment is paid for by you, then refunded by the company. They have a lot of exclusions, so fairly common but costly ailments wouldn't be covered. They were on watchdog for refusing to pay out on claims that were supposedly covered in the t&cs. If you successfuly claim your premiums will increase, where as they don't with petplan.

If you have 2 weeks left on current insurance you need to get one NOW if you plan to change as with new insurance the first 2 weeks will not be covered so you need to overlap.

Stay with PetPlan if you can afford it. It is the best. What you think you save by switching - you will pay double or more in claims that will be refused by say AnimalFriends.

I also was going to point out the 14 days cooling off period on new policies that you won't be covered for.

We've always used Direct Line. We have a Lifetime policy and until we claimed/had pre-existing conditions I couldn't risk not being covered I cancelled and took out a new policy each year with an introductory discount. When we made a claim they dealt directly with our vets and were very helpful. We heard good things about PetPlan but they were extortionate quotes for us.

Pet Plan here every time. I wont even look at others. Yes a bit more expensive in the first year than others but believe me they soon over take PP.
    Enjoy your puppy xx

Pet plan here too. I was with Tesco for the first year but switched to pet plan.
over my pups first year I did lots of reading and gained more knowledge of how the insurance companies worked.

Tesco were fine and paid out promptly but where they were a lot cheaper than pet plan when I first had my pup - at renewal Pet plan were cheaper. I didn't think the policy had gone up much but after checking they had hiked the premium after one claim.

The Tesco policy also didn't refresh the claim allowance each year - pet plan does.

I breathed a sigh of relief once I signed up with Pet Plan to be honest. I've just got to hope there are no gastro intestinal issues with pup until after Jan 2017 now.
