How to stop popup ads on android tablet?

I do not usually object to pop up ads if I can turn them off but recently a particularly annoying pop up ad for Just Eat has started popping up and floating about, on my android tablet, in the middle of a particular stream to which I subscribe.
I cannot turn it (the ad) off. The x does not work. I already have set my settings to automatically block pop ups but that does not work. I have downloaded AdBlock Plus but whenever I try to install it, it stops with a message "unfortunately Adblock Plus has stopped working". I have cleared out its cache to no effect. Now I am wondering it is a rogue extension. Anyone know how to clear that. (I am running 4.4.2)

I've found adblock extensions to be largely ineffective on Android. You might try Habit Browser - it has built-in adblocking that works very well without impacting performance.0

It's hard to tell without seeing it but sounds like something you've installed rather than a normal pop-up ad (if it's occurring on a range of sites), I'd go through your applications list and see what was installed around the same time and remove them to see if that gets rid of the pop up.

As above and not all Android versions allow ad blockers to work .
Could be a built in ad as some apps are advert included .
On a rooted phone you can install Mother Of All Ad Blockers file that writes common ad sites to the hosts file .Or ad your own to the hosts file . But root may void your warranty .0 -
Try Malwarebytes if you think you've got malware

Adblock now has it's own browser so that might work for you.
