Reserve hotel room without paying?

I'd like to reserve a room in a hotel in Milan for a few days for visa purpose, don't really want to pay it as I haven't finalised the itinerary and also don't know what outcome of the visa application will be. Does anybody know how to or where to book? Many thanks.

We are going to Sorrento in 2 weeks time , booked through Expedia , but havent paid for the hotel yet? , however they have taken card details in case we dont turn up0

If you use a hotel from one of the big chains ie Holiday Inn & book direct with the particular chain they have rates which you can cancel up until 1600 on arrival day.
