POP3, IMAP or Exchange?

I'm setting up an existing Outlook.com email address, on an Android phone.

It's asking what type of account it is.

The options are POP3, IMAP or Exchange.

Which one is it?

An Exchange server is a type of mail server. You'd know if you had one!

IMAP is newer than POP3 and is generally preferred. IMAP makes it much easier to access the same email account on multiple devices (as it typically doesn't delete mail from the server when its collected).

Microsofts help age for this is as follows, as Exchange is a Microsoft email standard it makes sense they would use it for outlook.com

    https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Set-up-email-on-an-Android-phone-or-tablet-886db551-8dfa-4fd5-b835-f8e532091872

The relevant portion is as follows:
Use the built-in Android mail app

You can also choose to set up mail using the built-in Android mail app.

Built-in mail app on Android device
If you're not sure what type of account you have, see the section Troubleshoot setup below.

    Set up an Outlook.com account
Tap Settings > Accounts > Add account > Exchange.

    Select Accounts
Type your full email address, for example <someone>@outlook.com. (This can be an email account ending with @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @msn.com, or @live.com, and includes international domains, such as @outlook.co.uk, or any custom domains hosted on Outlook.com.)

If you only want your email account to sync to your phone, tap Next and follow the rest of the prompts.

However, if you want other sync options, such as syncing your calendar and contacts as well, select Manual setup and follow the steps below.

NOTE: The manual steps below are for Outlook.com accounts only. If you're trying to set up a Yahoo, Gmail, or iCloud account, check those providers for information.

On the type of account page, select Exchange > Next.

Type your password and select Next.

On the Incoming server settings page set the following:

    Domain\Username
Make sure your full email address appears. For example, <someone>@outlook.com. If Domain and Username are separate text boxes on your device, leave the Domain box empty, and type your full email address in the Username box.

    Password
Use the password that you use to access your account.

    Server name
You might need to replace what's there with s.outlook.com for any email account ending with @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @msn.com, or @live.com, including international domains, such as @outlook.co.uk, or any custom domains hosted on Outlook.com.

    Port
    Use 443 or 993.

    Security type
Select SSL/TLS or make sure the Use secure connection (SSL) checkbox is checked, then tap Next.

On Account options, change or accept the default sync settings, and then select Next.

Name your account if you want and then select Next.

Not working? Make sure you entered your email and password correctly and try again because even one small typo will result in an error.

If you've turned on two-step verification, and you see an incorrect password error, see the section Troubleshoot email setup in this topic.

If you synced your calendar and contacts, go to those built-in apps on your device to view any items that might be there. If you synced tasks as well, you should see them in the calendar app on your device. It might take a few minutes for everything to sync.

You can also use the browser on your device to check your email account ending with @outlook.com, @hotmail,com, @msn.com, or @live.com email. Go to http://m.mail.live.com, and sign in to your email account.

Outlook.com being microsoft support Exchange. It is the best option here. POP3 is awful, IMAP is much better, Exchange offers even more features.

  • Thanks everyone.

    I've now got it sorted.
