Perishing Roof Felt - Fix?

Hey, the felt in my roof has begun to perish and as such its leaking through and then through a light fitting. Ive turned off all the lights in my house.

My question is, is there anything I can use to paint/cover the felt as a temporary fix to prevent the leaks from happening?

The other fix is obviously a full felt re-fit which isnt exactly cheap nor will it be a fix happening now but I do need to get a temporary fix in place ASAP. As its the weekend and now 1900 almost with it being Sunday tomorrow I don't see me getting a fix anytime in the next 48 hours.

Its hard to get anything under the felt to catch it due to the position as its right near the bottom of the roof slope, my first thought is to get something under to run it off in another direction to catch it or run it off where the felt is running it off to like some plastic (solid) sheeting or water proofed wood.

Perhaps some kind of shallow but big tray might work at the moment but searching is proving difficult.

Ideas/Help?

Are we talking about a shed roof here or the felt under the tiles of your house?

If the latter, it's not just a felt problem water should not be able to get under the tiles.
  • Its under the roof tiles. What else could it be, a roofer who my bank sent said the tiles all looked fine

My roof has tiles and no felt - nothing underneath them and doesn't leak. Is the leak by a chimney as then you could have damaged flashing?

Until recently our 1930s house also had no felt and although lots of dust got in there was never any water ingress, so I think you need to have a proper inspection as to what is going on.

The felt is fairly stable unless exposed to UV radiation or tiles become loose and cause friction damage to the felt in high winds. The most likely area to see this is at the edge, and this may be where the water it getting in with the wind blowing it under the tiles. You could find you have rot in the roof batons aand some of the nails holding the tiles in place may also be badly corroded, if this is the case.

As others have said. Your problem is not the sarking felt but the tiles themselves. If you had the felt replaced, that would involve stripping the roof. When it was finished it would not be the new sarking felt that was stopping a leak. But the fact that the tiles had been removed and replaced properly.
The application of sarking felt did not really become general until after WW11.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
