Really - get rid of the Sky and mobiles - you'll only miss them to start with. .

Not making excuses for CharlieC, but I am the partner of an ex-soldier and it is tough to be away from your other half while they are on duty. They are alllowed mobiles with them on most tours of duty, and if it means you can keep in touch with each other for the long 6 month periods away, then they are important in my opinion. It is probably cheaper for them to keep in touch with each other mobile to mobile than landline to mobile would be.

When my other half was away, my mobile was very high on my list of priorities, as it keeps you both going in the hard times apart.

Point taken  but £35 a month? I'm sure someone on the Phones board would be know of a way to cut that. If I'm wrong, and it really does cost that much, then fair enough, in the circumstances you describe it's not the luxury it is when you see each other every day.

My partner has been seen by me and my son for roughly 4 years of MY SONS 9 YR LIFE, I promise My mobile is important, as on a contract and a good tarrif I think OK will try and change once contract up, but remember we are talking about 3 phones, your loved ones voice is most precious You cannot put a price on that.
And I need to hear my husband often to know he is safe.

As I said, if that's what it costs, then fair enough. Cutting back and getting debt free is about getting rid of what you can do without, not about making unreasonable sacrifices.

I accept that in your case, mobile phones are not luxuries.:)

Have looked at IVA, but so scared, debt managment plan seems ok, but huge ammount of work, had an informal chat, and could take 17 years to pay off for our stupidity and wants

Charliec, the thing about a debt management plan is that it allows you enough money to live on while giving your creditors the same sort of payment that they would get if they went to court. Seriously, you should take advice from CCCS or National Debtline ... and let us know what they say.

It's a lot of work - for them! You'll just make one payment per month.

Yes, if any of your debts are with your current bank then you WILL have to change bank. Its not that big a deal really, a mornings work writing letters or telephoning the companies involved with the new account details and then go online and cancel every DD or SO in your current account. You might have to send a cheque out if a payment falls close to your changeover date but you won't have any hassle changing.

Setup a new account now before your credit record really hits rock bottom and you might still get a Switch/Maestro card, otherwise you'll be stuck with Visa Electron (not too bad, I have one) or something worse.

Personally an IVA was no good for me because I have a house and mortgage. When we sell this house we will be emmigrating to NZ and want to take as much equity as possible. With an IVA, you could end up giving a sizeable chunk of that equity back to your creditors. Also, an IVA is very expensive to setup and far too rigid for my liking.

I can highly recommend CCCS, I'm with them myself. National Debtline are also excellent from what I've been told.
