Heading to these two cities at New Year, 5 night each before we head onto Fiji.
Just wondering what are the must see places or hidden gems that you can recommend

Sydney Aus in New year -are you kidding :cool:0 -
I was in Sydney new year just gone. Went to Taronga Zoo for $170 as I was on my own and didn't fancy the crowds. I spent a day in Brisbane and I honestly wish I'd just passed through it, but you can do a day trip to Australia zoo which is awesome:T:T  :beer::beer: to the lil one

When we were in Sydney we did the usual stuff, ferry to Manly and Bondi beaches, wandered around the harbour area of course and the botanical gardens, but we loved a day trip to the Blue Mountains. Fantastic scenery, and there are lots of companies that do this if you don't want to get there on your own. Brisbane I know well. The city itself is not very interesting, but the Brisbane river is very attractive, lined with nice bars and restaurants, and South Bank is worth a visit. We also liked the Lone Pine koala sanctuary where you can get up close and hold them. Other animals as well. Otherwise, most people use Brisbane as a base to visit the Gold and Sunshine coasts.0

if you fancy a stunning sunset and a magical view of Brisbane at night, take a late dinner in the Summit restaurant at the top of Mount Coot-Tha.The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....0

Yes, forgot to mention Mt Coot tha. Absolutely great view of the city. The nearby botanical gardens are nice as well. Take the city cat down the river and spot some amazing houses as well. If you look at Tripadvisor, you have all the information you need on both cities.0

Here are my two cents worth on Sydney:
Botanic gardens is a nice walk and you can see the bridge from there too.
I really enjoyed going up to the Blue Mountains (A few hours out from Sydney but lovely views) Also the Jenolan Caves are worth visiting if your around that area.
If your after souvenirs I would say take a trip to Paddy's Market for cheap souvenirs.
Dee Why beach was lovely also has a outside pool which is free, much preferred it to Bondi (Thought Bondi was over rated). Manly beach is also nice.
Featherdale wildlife park if you can get there. Really enjoyed going there as you can get up close to the Kangaroos and other wildlife.
If you want something chocolatey either San Churro or Max Brenner for the sweet tooth (Plenty of them around).
Sky tower for views of Sydney
Enjoy your trip!0 -
Another vote for the Blue Mountains and botanical gardens in Sydney.0

We spent 12 days in Sydney earlier this year with a few days in Brisbane visiting family.
In Sydney, we loved Manly, Watsons Bay, Taronga Zoo, mooching around Darling Harbour & Circular Quay, we also went to The Blue Mountains, we took the train from Central Station, it took about 2 hours then we used the hop on/hop off trolley bus to explore the beautiful scenery. We also did the Bondi to Coogee walk, 5km coastal walk, half an hour or so on the bus from the CBD.
In Brisbane, we went to Noosa, stunning place to walk around. We previously went to Brisbane 24 years ago and went to Mount Coo'Tha and Tambourine Mountain, loved it all.0 -
Yet another vote for the blue mountains. There are some stunning walks around the area and I'd suggest an overnight stay rather than a day trip. I stayed in Katoomba and enjoyed my time there.
Trains from central Sydney take a couple of hours and are pretty inexpensive. The journey is covered on their version of the Oyster card too.
Beach wise I preferred Manly to Bondi.0
