Oh, I dunno... car crash waiting to happen!

It is all about acceptable risk*.
I was able to accept the very low risk of the bank finding out, because the alternative (not moving) would have put us in very difficult circumstances.

OP, can you just clarify, is your OH moving from being 'employed' by one company to being 'employed' by another? Or is he a self employed contractor moving from one contract to another? You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.0

The biggest risk of not informing the lender is tgat they somehow find out and withdraw their offer between echangw and completion. This would be a nightmare as you'd be legally bound to complete but not have the funds to do so. In which case you could lose your 10% deposit and more if the vendors costs exceeded this amount. It's a small risk but with a high enough impact that it scares people into not doing anything that risks their mortgage offer.Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!0

My husband is a contractor so can work for 9 months then be without work for 4 months etc. He had to put forward his last few years accounts.
When we applied for the mortgage he was in middle of a contract. He finished that one several weeks before we were due to complete. We did not say anything. We knew he would pick up a contract over the coming months and we were financially secure enough to go ahead anyway.
!
But that isn't a change of job. He remained an independent contractor. By examining his income records the bank satisfied themselves as to his overall income regardless of whether he worked every week of the yearYou can pick your friends and you can pick your nose but you can't pick your friend's nose.0
